Process - Week 11

This week was a week of new and interesting learning experiences, but a place where I can put a post in the ground and say "I will grow because of this".  This week included SLLC, second round of a job interview, preparing for a substitute, and the normal planning of lessons.  This entire process is just that a PROCESS. I am seeing some of that growth but I am also seeing more areas to grow in.

One learning moment of the week was: adaptability is key.  SLLC I want a work day- but it is also sometimes frustrating, it messes up ALL my plans.  It was good to learn this week, that I have to be willing to adjust and go with the flow.

Challenges of the week:
  • Clarity in directions and questions.  I can give directions, I know how, but I need to strive to be concise and to the point- the provide clarification if I am not. Sometimes writing instructions on a PowerPoint slide or on the whiteboard can help students visually see expectations of a project or activity.
  • Connectedness: Does my bell work connect to my objective, then to my closing activity? Do I explain the why in my lesson?
  • Always answer: What are we learning? Why are we learning it? Why does it matter to me as a learner?
  • The details matter- taking one more glance at that assignment or test matters.

I focused more on my challenges this week as I finally had another person teach and sit in on my lessons. While I was at SLLC a substitute covered my classes and lessons. The substitute is in pursuit of his PhD. He gave me some excellent insight and direction to my lessons. Taking critiques is all apart of the process. Through all the advice that has been given to me over the past eleven weeks I have grown in my teaching skills, and will continue to grow. I look forward to the process in the future!
