Asking for help- Week 4

Time keeps flying by! I can't believe I just finished up my fourth week of student teaching. Many more experiences and opportunities have come from this past week. This week I felt like everything I was doing was "right." During my Metal I shop class we finally started our first project. The student flew through the project. They worked as a team and were always willing to ask for help.
One this class I have a student that always seemed sheltered. They look away when I made eye contact with them, they never ask questions, and they never seemed happy to do the work I assigned. However, on Wednesday this student said, "Ms. Wasson will you help me?" At first I did not know who said it, but once I figured out I was shocked (in a good way). I quickly got up from my desk to helped the student measure out their tool gauge.

That moment of engagement felt amazing! It was not long after that other students starting asking if I could help them. From this experience, it made student teaching feel right for me. It makes me excited to keep going! I want to engage more with the students. I want to be able to answer their questions. Above all, I want my students to know that I am always here to help them all!

  1. Heather, so glad you had a breakthrough moment with a difficult student, and that your class is having a positive time in the shop! Bridging the gap to engagement is an important step in the process of building respect and rapport with students. What else happened this week?

    1. Tiffany,
This week I was able to work with my Ag Mechanics again after not teaching them for almost two weeks. Also, I had my first unit assessment. The lowest grade on the assessment was an 84%. I am hoping for more success moving forward to new material. :)
