Reflection on Problem Solving Lab

As I reflect on my problem solving lab there is a lot that I would change. First, I would change the day that I presented my lesson. The reason for this is because I got a positive learning experiences through watching and participating in my cohorts lesson presentations. I find strengths and weaknesses in all lessons that were presented. Dr. Foster also gives amazing feedback to everyone that can help guide you during your lesson.

The first comment Dr. Foster gave after the first lesson was that in a Problem Solving Approach you want to do the following:
1. Present the problem.
2. Ask the kids what they need to know to solve the problem presented.
3. Work the problem.
4. Give information.

My lesson was nothing like that! Dr. Foster said as teachers you should always be able to adapt your lesson. I didn’t know how in five minuets I could change my lesson to fit the order he had suggested. Therefore, I presented it the way I planned. I gave the students the information first and then I gave them the problem.

After realizing I just spoon-fed the students the answers I understand why the Problem Solving Approach works better. It engages the students more in their learning. The students are trying to learn isn’t of being taught. If I ever get the chance to use Problem Solving I will do it the right way instead of the wrong way.

  1. Heather, great job incorporating Dr. Foster's pro tips for PBL lessons. What were some additional gems and opps from your lesson? Can you provide more detail on your lesson?
